Hapkido is a system of self-defense based on fundamental offensive and defensive techniques. These techniques can be
classified as follows:

Empty hands against empty hands
Empty hands against a weapon
Weapon against weapon

Each of these categories includes punching, kicking, sweeping, joint locking, grappling, throwing and pressure points.

Hapkido is based on the theory of circular defense as opposed to direct defense. Direct defense can cause injury and may be unsuccessful against greater power. Hapkido’s circular defense requires minimal power but more knowledge and skill. These
delicate techniques will almost always overcome brute force .

6 SENSE THEORY

Master Kim's Philosophy is that Hapkido is like our six senses.

For example:

Hapkido is your ESP.......................…Form of pressure point – joint locks – kicking
Tae Kwon Do is your mouth............…Hard style of Martial Arts.
Tai chi is your nose..............................Form of breathing exercises
Aikido & Jujitsu are your ears.............Circular joint locks
Judo is your skin...................................Form of throwing
Kung Fu is your eyes...........................Soft style of Martial Arts

Completing your face and giving you more than one sense of awareness to expand on,  teaches Martial Arts in the same way,
giving you a complete understanding on the Martial Arts and its many techniques.

Hapkido is a complete Martial Art where you receive a full and well-rounded Martial Arts education.  You will learn the Mental
and Spiritual benefits of the Martial Arts as well as training in the Physical aspects.  It is also includes training in 72 weapons
starting with the sword, fan, cane, staff, rope, knife, etc.



WATER THEORY

When you see water, it is very peaceful.  When water is calm that is harmony.  When water is disturbed it creates, waves, and
can flow anywhere.  The stronger the disturbance, the stronger the wave, for instance the harder the attack, the greater the
resistance.  When you hit water hard with your hand, you hurt your hand.  If you gently lay your hand in water, it will flow gently.  It
absorbs the force of any foreign stimulation.  You can never sever water, it is always flowing.  When heat touches water, it flies
(steam).  When cold comes, water gets hard (ice).  Water is purity, it cleanses everything.  Water cleans your life.  Whatever
you do water can clean it.



AIR THEORY    (Dan – Jun breathing)

Air supports life.  Deep breathing allows oxygen to flow throughout our body stimulating our nerves much like a massage would
stimulate our muscles.  Through practicing deep breathing we can control our emotions, if we let our emotions control us, we
lose our breathing capacity.



SUN THEORY    (Sharing happiness)

The sun gives us life-supporting energy.  Its sunshine sets us free from darkness helping us find answers to our problems.  It is
like the theory of Hapkido, harmonizing the mind and body to find happiness in daily life.  By sharing this happiness we
promote world peace.
